The special prosecutor Robert Mueller rejected on Tuesday prison for Michael Flynn , ex-adviser in security of the president of the United States, Donald Trump , for his collaboration in the investigation of the Russian plot.
“Given the substantial assistance of the accused and other considerations detailed below, a sentence at the lower end of the planned scale – including a sentence that does not impose a period of incarceration – is appropriate and justified,” Mueller said in a file judicial.
Flynn, Trump’s advisor in the 2016 presidential campaign and former White House national security adviser, pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI, mainly on his talks with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Sergei Kislyak.
“The defendant has helped with several ongoing investigations,” explained the court document, in the investigation “in relation to links or coordination between the Russian government and the people associated with the campaign team of President Donald J. Trump. “
The prosecutor also referred to Flynn’s participation in 19 interviews with his services or other lawyers from the US Department of Justice.
The special prosecutor’s main mission is to determine if there was collusion between Russian officials and Trump’s campaign team in 2016 , an investigation regularly labeled as “witch hunts” by the president, who also criticizes Mueller with vehemence.
