A child died and at least 45 others were injured when a bus carrying a Tennessee youth soccer team broke off an interstate off ramp and overturned before dawn on Monday in central Arkansas , authorities said. .
The soccer team at the Orange Mound Youth Association’s elementary school in southeast Memphis had played in a tournament in Dallas over the weekend, according to the WMC television station in Memphis . Orange Mound is a historically black neighborhood that unites its youth soccer teams, where children train to be part of the highly competitive Melrose High School team .
“On behalf of all the people of Memphis, our hearts and prayers are with the children of Orange Mound and their families involved in the tragic bus accident this morning in Arkansas.”Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said in a statement.
Sports teams and coaches who believe they are affiliated with the organization have not returned phone calls or emails from The Associated Press on Monday morning.
Arkansas state police said the bus crashed on Interstate 30 near Benton, about 40 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Little Rock, while traveling back to Memphis, Tennessee . Police said most of the injured were children who were taken to hospitals in Little Rock and Benton .
