Congresswoman-elect Alexandria Ocasio Cortéz (New York) today joined a protest by liberal groups in front of the office of the Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, in which attention was called to climate change.
Puerto Rican Ocasio Cortez – who is participating this week in the orientation of the congressmen elected in last week’s elections – has not yet decided whether she will support Pelosi as a speaker. But, he has also warned that he would be worried about an effort to replace it with a less liberal person.
Pelosi welcomed the demonstration and issued a press release in which he announced that he has asked his caucus to re-establish the Climate Change Committee at the next Congress, which he hopes to lead.
At the moment, Pelosi is the leader of the democratic minority, position that will maintain until the end of the session 115 of the Congress, that concludes in December. At the end of the month, Democrats elected to the House of Representatives will select their leadership for session 116, which begins in January.
Today’s demonstration outside the Pelosi office was called by the Justice Democrats and Sunrise Movement groups.
Ocasio Cortez said he simply wanted to give support to the protesters and that Pelosi herself appreciates that kind of expression.
“It’s about raising the voice and the message that we need a new agreement (green energy) and that we need to reach 100% renewable energy because our lives depend on it,” said Ocasio Cortez.
In a statement, Pelosi said she was inspired by the activism of those who lead efforts to address climate change.
“I have recommended to my fellow House Democrats that we reinstate the special committee to address the climate crisis,” he said, noting that his party campaigned for a plan to invest $ 1 billion in new infrastructure that is resistant to climate change. At the same time it seeks to create 16 million new high-paying jobs around the US.
Pelosi exhorted the Capitol Police to allow the expression of environmental groups.
