The World Surfing League has announced that starting next year there will be equality of bonuses between men and women in all their competitions.
The director of the League, Sophie Goldschmidt, explains that one of the objectives is to promote the presence of women in surfing.
“There are more women’s events, we have increased the number of women in surfing and increased the monetary prizes, we have invested in marketing and promotion, it has really been a path that we have undertaken in recent years and this is the next natural step”.
Six times world champion, Stephanie Gilmore hopes to serve as an example to other sports.
The star of surfing and eleven times world champion, Kelly Slater, claims to be proud of his sport.
“Above all I am proud of our sport for doing this, for giving this example, I hope other sports do the same, I think it’s something that we will appreciate in the long term, I hope one day we can look back and say that surfing was the first sport that did it and that is now like that in all sports. “
Surfing has been the first professional world league based in the United States to adopt this measure.
