The Atletico Madrid coach considered compatriot Lionel Messi as the best footballer in the world but admitted that he preferred the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo in a “normal team”
Diego Simeone was involved in a controversy during the World Cup in 2018, when he questioned the performance of the FC Barcelona striker in the South American squad following a 3-0 defeat by Croatia that would reach the final of the competition.
“What I said in the video, in the message I sent to Germán Burgos [Atletico Madrid’s assistant coach] – we were talking about football, just like anyone else and I was not talking about who was the best in the world – a normal team had money to hire a footballer, possibly Ronaldo would fit better. Now, in a very important team, Messi safely, well surrounded, is better than Ronaldo, “he explained.
“If I had to choose between Messi or Ronaldo, I would have chosen Messi, certainly. I have no doubt,” said the coach.
