The monstrous saga of Cloverfield is not over after three movies. But what has Overlord , recently released, to do with it?
Despite the customs of the Hollywood film industry, there was no one who predicted that what began with that repetitive and short-lived experiment that was the film Cloverfield (Matt Reeves, 2008) would become a saga , continuing with the singular and satisfying 10 Cloverfield Lane (Dan Tachtenberg, 2016) and the curious and explanatory The Cloverfield Paradox (Julius Onah, 2018), released on Netflixalmost without warning. But, although the first could be forgettable, there is no doubt that its continuations have been worthwhile, especially the second film, in which nothing indicated that it belonged to this story and in which the monstrous is far from having tentacles and jaws that would have enchanted HP Lovecraft , and despite the fact that the last installment is somewhat undervalued.
And now it has reached the Overlord theaters (Julius Avery, 2018), whose initial plot had been conceived by filmmakers JJ Abrams ( Lost ) and Billy Ray ( Captain Phillips ) as the fourth contribution of the franchise before Mark L. Smith ( The reborn ) polished Ray’s script at the behest of Paramout Pictures, which took over the project in 2017, and at some unknown time in 2018 will take this other course. Abrams himself declared Digital Spylast February that, although the spirit of the saga is to keep its details secret and a different thing “would feel counterintuitive”, I was wishing that the viewers saw the film because, among other aspects, “it is a real madness”. But in April he revealed that he would no longer be integrated into Cloverfield and that the real third sequel was developing.
And, to complete the prevailing confusion, Julius Avery has declared in an interview for IGN that the plan had never included Overlord as part of the saga . “Not everything that comes from [Bad Robot] is going to be a Cloverfield movie, ” the director explained . “The franchise is really great and, because it’s great, [people] see the Bad Robot logo, they see the name of JJ Abrams and add two and two. This is her own beast, but it’s great that everyone has shown a lot of interest in her. ” In any case, we can say that Overlord would have been a decent piece of the narrative puzzle that the writers hired by Bad Robot -Drew Goddard (Bad times at El Royale ), Damien Chazelle ( La La Land ), Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken ( Notorious Nick ) and Oren Uziel ( Shimmer Lake ) so far – have been building in the last ten years.
And, although its impressive sequence of opening is the highlight of the film, for its visual planning, its assembly in all the senses and the enormous intensity that is achieved with them, from now on it maintains the interest for what happens and the tension never decays . On the other hand, the staff of actors available to Avery works as well as they are asked : Jovan Adepo ( The Leftovers ) as the soldier Boyce, Wyatt Russell ( Black Mirror ) in the skin of Captain Ford and reminding us of the coolest characters that an eight of his father, Kurt Russell ( The Hateful Eight ), Mathilde Ollivier ( Boss Level ) as Chloe, Pilou Asbæk ( Game of Thrones) playing Captain Wafner, John Magaro ( Love and Letters ) as Tibbet sniper, Dominic Applewhite ( The King’s Speech ) playing the soldier Jacob Rosenfeld or Erich Redman ( United 93 ) as Dr. Schmidt.
Also Bokeem Woodbine ( The Rock ) of the sergeant Rensin, Jacob Anderson ( Broadchurch ) and Iain De Caestecker ( Agents of SHIELD ) putting face to the soldiers Dawson and Morton Chase or the first-timer Gianny Taufer like the small Paul. No cast member looks up to amazement nor his papers give for that, but he does not need to. Nor for the followers of Cloverfield to entertain themselves with Overlord , in which not a few analysts have pointed out that, even having decided to finally remove it from the franchise or without having ever integrated it, the details of what the US paratroopers discover in the Nazi-occupied village, everything they use for their purposes, may well be a consequence of what we saw in The Cloverfield Paradox , as the catastrophe of the first film. And surely not a few spectators would love it to be true.
