The movie raised 22.2 million dollars this weekend and could reach 28 million to be held on Monday on Labor Day in the US.
The romantic comedy “Crazy Rich Asians” once again took over the leadership of the North American box office for the third consecutive weekend, in the middle of a positive summer for the cinema, according to preliminary results of the industry released this Sunday.
The Warner Bros film, whose cast is mostly made up of Asians, grossed about $ 22.2 million between Friday and Sunday, falling 10% from the previous weekend, according to the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
However, the success of the film is expected to continue and reach up to 28 million dollars this Monday, on the holiday for the celebration of Labor Day in the United States.
The adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel, starring Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding and Constance Wu, tells the story of a US economics professor who meets the family of her wealthy boyfriend in Singapore. It is a film about the shock of love, family and great wealth.
“Crazy Rich” has helped the North American box office to achieve what the Hollywood Reporter magazine called a “spectacular recovery compared to last year”, as a result of which revenues are expected to finish this summer 14 percent above of the previous one.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. scored another success with the thriller “The Meg”, in second place at the box office, with 10.5 million dollars. Jason Statham personifies a rescue diver trying to save scientists trapped in a submarine attacked by a huge prehistoric shark.
